It never ceases to amaze me the logos that I see out in the business arena today. You can definitely tell good ones from the not so good ones. Perhaps you’re wondering what separates a good one from a bad one specifically? There are a variety of factors that can differentiate between the two. Here are three hints to help you with your next logo.
Here are examples of some of my most favorite logos. You know who they are the moment you see them. Logos used under Fair Use Doctrine.

1.) Let’s start with scalability. When you create a logo you have to ensure that it is scalable in any size becuase you will need it variable sizes for variable types of media etc. Ensuring the design is clear and concise and also important, so it helps to ensure that your logo was professionaly made. Most small business owners invest money into products, advertising, etc., but rarely want to invest in a good logo. DO IT! Invest the money in a good graphic artist to ensure your logo can be used in all aspects of your business. Generally they will provide you with a vector image which is the best image available.
2.) Color and clarity go hand in hand. If you use too many variable colors in can detract and take away from the clarity of the image. You also want to consider the relation between emotion and color. If you think about it, red is the most popular color of choice for food chains and restaurants because it is linked to the fact that people associate food with the color red. ANother aspect of color, is you want to ensure that the logo can be used in both color and black and white, and still be easily identifiable.
3.) Ensuring that the logo is a terrific representation of your company or product line is also a plus but not a requirement. It used to be common practice back in the day to have a computer icon in your logo if you were a computer repair man, or a typewriter if you were a typesetter. Of course that is not as popular in today’s trends. But you do want the logo to represent professionalism and to convey certain aspects in regards to what you do.
A business logo is the brand image asscociated with your business. It will be used in every aspect of your business so you want to ensure that you put the time and effort into creating it, so that it works for you, just like the name of your business works for you. Make it professional, make it unique, make it your own.
If you’re wondering what a good logo might be, think of what the Swoosh did for Nike. You know who the company is even without a name attached to the logo. Some logos are symbols, and some logos are names and symbol’s together, it’s your perogative, but keep these helpful tips in mind when you create your next logo.
